John Prescott’s son joins Greens
John Prescott’s Son Joins Green Party
Sky News has learned that David Prescott, the son of former Labour deputy prime minister John Prescott, has become a member of the Green Party. The move marks a significant shift in the political landscape, particularly following his father’s passing a year prior.
Defection Sparks Debate
David Prescott, who grew up in a family deeply rooted in socialist ideals and trade unionism, joined the Greens in October 2025. His father, John, served alongside Tony Blair for a decade, and the defection has been described as “hugely disappointing” by Karl Turner, the Labour MP who succeeded him in the 2010 general election.
“David was born into the Labour Party and like myself, he came from a family that has always stood by socialist principles. Yet, he has always made his own political choices, even if they differ from his father’s.”
In a recent Facebook post, David appeared with Green activists in Gorton and Denton, the constituencies that secured the party’s first by-election victory in its history. The caption read: “What. A. Day. Hope Beat Hate.”
Poll Results Highlight Shift
A YouGov poll for Sky News revealed the Green Party surged to second place, rising four points to 21%. This momentum is largely attributed to the publicity surrounding the Gorton and Denton by-election, which saw Labour finish third. The result has intensified concerns within the party about losing progressive voters to the Greens, particularly over issues like the war in Gaza.
Labour’s recent defeat in the by-election has been overshadowed by the escalating Middle East conflict, which was ignited by US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran. Despite this, some Labour MPs have criticized the government, suggesting the outcome reflects poor political decisions.
“This government has alienated its core supporters and sidelined its grassroots activists. It’s no wonder voters are seeking alternatives,” remarked one Labour MP.
A Green Party source noted that David’s decision to join the party was not publicly announced to avoid discomfort for remaining Labour allies. However, he was among 2,000 volunteers who supported Hannah’s campaign in Gorton and Denton. The source added, “We appreciate his contribution to our cause.”
David’s Political Journey
David Prescott previously campaigned for Labour in several seats, including East Hull and Greenwich and Woolwich, but was not selected. His only success came in Gainsborough in 2015, where he lost to Conservative MP Edward Leigh. In 2017, he was suspended from his role as an aide to Jeremy Corbyn due to harassment allegations, though he denied the claims and the party did not remove his membership at the time.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer acknowledged the Gorton and Denton performance as “very disappointing” but emphasized the necessity of continuing the fight. The by-election loss has prompted calls for internal reform, with some urging a strategic realignment to retain progressive voters.
Call for Democratic Reform
Labour MPs have increasingly voiced demands for a shift in leadership and policy. “We need to work with other progressive parties,” said one, stressing that cooperation and democratic changes are essential to reclaiming the center-left vote. “Unless Labour undergoes a complete transformation, it risks losing its foundation.”
