Boy, 14, dies in e-bike crash with car as parents warn ‘this is reason why they are banned from the roads’

Teen killed after collision with Kia Sportage in Chesterfield

A 14-year-old boy tragically lost his life following a collision between an electric motorbike and a car in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. The incident occurred on Newbold Road at approximately 8:30pm last Thursday, leaving his family devastated.

Finley Dawson, the teenager, was riding the e-bike when it collided with a Kia Sportage. He and his 15-year-old passenger, who was seated behind him, were thrown from the vehicle and onto the road during the crash.

Finley was transported to the hospital, but his injuries were deemed non-survivable. He passed away the day after the accident. His friend remains hospitalized in a serious yet stable condition.

Derbyshire police stated that the car driver is currently treated as a witness and is aiding investigators in the case. No arrests have been made at this time.

“There is a reason these bikes are banned from the road, and devastatingly Finley has paid the ultimate price in losing his life,” said the families in a joint statement. “His friend has sustained serious injuries and has to come to terms with growing up without his best mate.”

The families emphasized that while the thrill of riding an electric bike on roads may seem appealing, it can lead to fatal consequences. They urged young riders to recognize the risks involved.

In the UK, riders must be at least 16 and possess a valid driving license to operate an electric motorbike on public roads. However, pedal-assisted electric bikes can be used by individuals aged 14 and older, provided their continuous rated power output does not exceed 250 watts.
