Spain officially removes Israel ambassador amid diplomatic rift
The Spanish government has officially relieved Ana Sálomon of her role as ambassador to Israel, as revealed in a notice published in the state gazette on Tuesday. This followed approval by the Council of Ministers, marking the first time Spain has withdrawn its envoy from Tel Aviv. The move leaves the embassy operating under a chargé d’affaires, reducing its diplomatic standing.
Sálomon’s recall came in September 2023, following Spain’s acknowledgment of a Palestinian state. Israel responded by recalling its own ambassador to Madrid, Rodica Radian-Gordon, in May 2024. However, a replacement for the Madrid post was never appointed, as the initial candidate resigned to take another position. Netanyahu’s administration did not proceed with a new appointment, leaving the role vacant.
Relations between the two nations have deteriorated significantly. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar labeled Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez as antisemitic, citing his rhetoric about Gaza. This led to the suspension of two ministers’ access to Israel. The decision to dismiss Sálomon is seen as a direct response to these tensions.
Spain’s action underscores the deepening divide. While maintaining diplomatic ties, the country has chosen to scale back its presence in Tel Aviv. The chargé d’affaires, Dana Erlich, now oversees the mission, signaling a shift in the bilateral relationship.
“Sánchez’s statements reflect a deep-seated antisemitism,” said Gideon Saar, framing the conflict as a result of Spain’s political stance.
