Seven arrested at base demo accused of supporting banned group
Seven detained at RAF base protests linked to banned group
Five men and two women were taken into custody on Sunday during a demonstration at Lakenheath airbase, accused of backing the Palestine Action organization. The arrests occurred as part of a peace encampment protesting military involvement in the Iran conflict, according to Suffolk Police. The group’s proscribed status was highlighted in the incident, with authorities stating the individuals were detained on “suspicion of supporting a proscribed organization.”
“They have been transported to the Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for further inquiry,” a spokesperson noted. “Suffolk Police is committed to upholding the law impartially, responding to current circumstances rather than potential future ones. Appropriate measures will be taken if offenses are suspected.”
The protest followed media reports that a US fighter jet downed in Iran on Friday had been stationed at the base. A six-day peace camp, which included a continuous vigil, was ongoing as the demonstrations prepared to conclude on Monday. The arrests were reportedly triggered by a speech delivered by retired colonel Chris Romberg to the gathering of protesters.
The High Court had previously declared the ban on Palestine Action unlawful in February, yet permitted the Home Office to challenge the ruling. This means the group remains proscribed until the appeal’s resolution. Suffolk Police also confirmed two individuals were charged with obstructing traffic after a blockade was set up at the base on Saturday.
