Four People Perish in Channel Crossing Attempt, French Authorities Confirm
French officials in Calais confirmed the tragic loss of life following a boat incident off the northern French coast. The event, which occurred near Boulogne, involved a taxi boat that sank, leaving four individuals dead. Rescue operations are ongoing as emergency services work to stabilize the remaining 30 survivors.
“A taxi boat capsized today. The situation is still under evaluation and could evolve,” stated French authorities in a press statement shared by Reuters.
Reports indicate that the incident took place between the beaches of Équihen and Écault, south of Calais. Firefighters and intensive care units arrived at the scene at 07:30 local time (06:30 BST). A press conference is scheduled to provide further updates shortly.
Weather conditions in the English Channel have been favorable recently, following weeks of turbulent seas. This calm has coincided with a seasonal uptick in crossings, which typically rise during summer months. However, the number of arrivals in the UK via small boats dropped by 33% compared to the same period in 2025.
Recent Crossing Statistics
Over the past three years, more than 41,472 people reached the UK by small boat from France in 2025 alone. From January 1 to March 26, 2026, 4,441 individuals made the journey, a decline from the 6,642 recorded in 2025 during the same timeframe. Officials suggest this decrease may be linked to harsher conditions in the Channel during the early months of 2026.
