British Special Forces Base Under Drone Attack Amid Concerns Over Putin’s Alleged Support for Iran
A British Special Forces station in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan region, faced a drone assault on Wednesday night, leaving several American troops wounded. The incident has raised questions about potential Russian backing for Iran’s military strategies, according to recent reports.
“Our personnel in Erbil are actively involved in securing the base, but unfortunately, multiple drones did reach the site,” stated Brigadier Guy Foden, a commander at the UK’s Permanent Joint Headquarters.
The attack coincided with statements from Defence Secretary John Healey, who suggested that Vladimir Putin’s influence might be evident in Iran’s tactics, particularly their use of aerial drones. During a briefing at Northwood military headquarters in Hertfordshire, Healey highlighted the growing evidence of a connection between Russia and Iran.
Healey emphasized that the UK is currently examining a drone that struck a hangar at Akrotiri for traces of foreign involvement, noting, “We’re analyzing the drone’s components to determine if Russian or other international elements played a role. It’s unsurprising that Putin’s covert influence is suspected in Iran’s actions, especially given his current benefits from soaring oil prices.”
Following the strike, the UK has escalated its air defenses, with RAF Typhoon and F-35B jets conducting patrols over Jordan, Qatar, and the UAE. These operations, supported by Voyager refueling aircraft, aim to safeguard British interests and allies. Over 300 operational hours have been logged by British pilots in these defensive missions.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, recently issued a message of retaliation after his father was killed in a US-Israeli strike. The statement, released via state television, declared, “We will not hesitate to avenge the blood of our martyrs. Every loss to the enemy is a cause for retribution.”
Despite claims that Khamenei suffered serious injuries in the attack, including a leg wound and abdominal trauma, he has reportedly been in a coma. The incident followed Iran’s warning to ships avoiding the Strait of Hormuz, which has led to a sharp rise in heating oil prices.
Healey acknowledged the early stages of the situation, stating, “The reports of Iran mining the straits are gaining credibility. The number of commercial vessels targeted is significant. Resolving this is crucial, not only for oil prices but also for global economic stability. While releasing reserve oil provides temporary relief, it doesn’t address the core issue.”
