Fresh appeal for information 30 years after murder of graduate Melanie Hall

Detectives are now seeking new leads in the case of Melanie Hall’s murder, which occurred 30 years ago. The renewed effort follows the approaching 30th anniversary of the incident, prompting a spotlight on the investigation.

Melanie Hall, a 25-year-old graduate, disappeared after spending the evening with friends at the Cadillacs nightclub in Bath. She was last seen seated on a stool near the dance floor, engaged in conversation with an unknown man around 1:45 a.m. on June 9, 1996.

Her remains were found in 2009 by workers on the M5 motorway, near Thornbury in Gloucestershire. The discovery, over 30 miles from the scene of her disappearance, has been a critical moment in the case, though many questions remain unanswered.

New appeal on BBC One’s Crimewatch Live

As the 30th anniversary of Melanie’s death approaches, a fresh appeal for information will be featured on BBC One’s Crimewatch Live. The programme will also include interviews with her father, Steve Hall, and sister, Dominique.

“Melanie’s family has faced immense sorrow and uncertainty for nearly three decades, yet they have demonstrated remarkable strength throughout this time,” said Detective Chief Inspector Ben Lavender, who leads the investigation. “Our goal is to deliver the justice and clarity they deserve.”

Lavender emphasized the importance of public recollection, asking if anyone remembers the events of June 8-9, 1996, when England played Switzerland in the Euros. The city of Bath was bustling that night, and Melanie was seen with her boyfriend and friends before entering the nightclub.

The last confirmed sighting of Melanie was at 1:10 a.m. on June 9, as her companions departed. She was alone, seated by the dance floor’s edge. Investigators suspect she may have left with her killer, as her coat was retrieved from a cloakroom but her personal belongings were never found.

Missing items and unanswered questions

Melanie’s clothing—including a pale blue silk dress, black suede mule shoes, a cream long-sleeved jacket, and a black satchel-type handbag—has not been recovered. Alongside her, a Midland chequebook, bank card, and items like a Next watch and silver drop earrings were also lost.

Lavender noted that her body was found without these items, suggesting they were taken after her disappearance. “We believe Melanie could have met her killer outside the club or in a vehicle,” he added. “Any details about a car parked near the slip road on June 9, or anyone in Bath connected to this area, would be valuable.”

Crimestoppers has offered a reward of up to £20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. The appeal aims to rekindle memories and uncover clues that might have been overlooked over the years.
