Diplomats go virtual to witness Gaza - Twelve nations participated in an innovative virtual diplomatic field visit to examine conditions at a displacement facility within the Gaza Strip, according to United Nations announcements made on Thursday. During this online engagement, representatives heard directly from local residents regarding their most urgent requirements and challenges.
Ramiz Alakbarov, serving as the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory alongside his deputy Suzanna Tkalec, orchestrated the digital tour of the Al Mawasi location situated in Khan Younis. This coordinated effort allowed international observers to witness firsthand the circumstances faced by displaced populations without physical travel to the region.
Overcoming Access Barriers
Stéphane Dujarric, the UN Spokesperson conducting his regular briefing from New York, explained the significance of this initiative. He noted that diplomatic missions have encountered similar challenges to journalists in gaining entry to Gaza since October 2023, making virtual alternatives increasingly valuable for international understanding.
Through videolink technology, the participating diplomats observed both living conditions and ongoing relief operations at the displacement site. The virtual experience included meaningful interactions with children, adults, and humanitarian aid workers present at the facility.
At one distribution point, observers witnessed community members—including young children—collecting water transported by truck. This water distribution operates through a project managed by a local partner organization and receives financial backing from the UN's OPT Humanitarian Fund.
Voices from the Displaced
Mr. Dujarric relayed messages from displaced individuals who communicated their priorities to the visiting diplomats. These residents emphasized the necessity for sustainable water services, particularly during the intense summer heat, alongside cash-for-work programs that would enable families to secure adequate food supplies.
The virtual participants also received guidance through hundreds of tents densely packed along the shoreline area. This visual tour provided comprehensive insight into the scale of accommodation needs within the camp.
Ramiz Alakbarov expressed gratitude to the participating diplomats for their financial contributions supporting relief operations. He indicated that additional resources remain essential to both maintain current efforts and expand their scope, highlighting the need for continued funding and political engagement to address persistent obstacles.
Ongoing Humanitarian Operations
UNRWA, the UN agency dedicated to assisting Palestinian populations, continues delivering assistance throughout the Gaza Strip, as confirmed in an update released on Wednesday. The organization's work spans multiple sectors including water distribution, healthcare, and education services.
Monitoring conducted by the Water and Sanitation Cluster during June revealed continued deterioration in water accessibility. Approximately 84 percent of surveyed households reported experiencing moderate to high levels of water insecurity, underscoring the severity of the crisis.
Between June 16 and 30, UNRWA distributed approximately 79 million litres of domestic and drinking water, reaching more than 860,000 displaced individuals on a daily basis. This substantial volume demonstrates the scale of logistical operations required to sustain the population.
Health services also remained active during this period. UNRWA personnel screened nearly 5,000 children aged between six and 59 months at various health centres and medical points, identifying 203 malnourished youngsters who required nutritional intervention.
In parallel developments, the World Health Organization announced it is supplying specialized bottles to 45 infants in Gaza born with cleft lip or cleft palate conditions. These congenital conditions prevent normal breastfeeding, making alternative feeding methods essential for infant survival and development.
WHO emphasized that the specialized feeding support necessary for these conditions has become increasingly difficult to obtain due to ongoing shortages of medical supplies within the enclave, compounding challenges for affected families.
