At present, merely ten countries have achieved this level of response, highlighting the vast potential for improvement worldwide.

Why Methane Matters: A Short-Term Climate Lever

Methane plays a disproportionate role in contemporary climate change, accounting for approximately one-third of current global warming. Its atmospheric behavior differs markedly from carbon dioxide. While CO2 persists for centuries, methane remains in the atmosphere for a considerably shorter duration. This characteristic means that reducing methane emissions today can yield measurable climate benefits within years rather than waiting decades for results.

Carbon dioxide remains the principal driver of long-term warming. But it is also time to prioritize the cutting of methane, said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Aggressive cuts could produce visible temperature relief within a generation.

More than sixty percent of methane emissions originate from human activities, with agriculture, fossil fuel extraction, and waste management being the primary sources. Among these sectors, fossil fuels present the most rapid and economically efficient opportunities for emission reductions, making them a critical focus for immediate intervention.

The MARS System: Tracking Leaks in Near Real Time

UNEP's Methane Alert and Response System, commonly known as MARS, represents a significant advancement in environmental monitoring. By utilizing satellite data, the system identifies substantial methane leaks almost as they occur and immediately notifies relevant governments and operators. This timely warning enables swift investigation and repair of the identified sources.

Since its inception in 2023, MARS has generated over five thousand alerts spanning thirty-three nations. These notifications have catalyzed more than forty verified repairs, demonstrating the system's practical effectiveness. One particularly notable case occurred in Algeria, where a single alert prompted the closure of a leak that had been releasing methane for decades. The resulting climate benefits equate to removing half a million vehicles from roads annually.

We can now see methane pollution as it happens, in near real time, from space, said UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen. With this capability, inaction is not an oversight – it is a choice.

Building Capacity for Faster Response

The expanded programme focuses on strengthening technical assistance for governments while improving access to comprehensive methane emissions data. Countries will receive support to develop the institutional capacity needed to investigate and respond to alerts more efficiently. This holistic approach addresses both the technological and organizational barriers that have historically limited response rates.

Cutting methane emissions is one of the most important steps we can take to tackle climate change – and one of the most simple and cost-effective, too, said Michael Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies who serves also as UN Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions.

Bloomberg emphasized that the necessary data already exists to halt methane leaks. The current effort centers on transforming that information into more decisive and rapid action on the ground. He noted, We have the data we need to stop methane leaks, and now we are helping countries turn that data into faster, bolder action.

The Path Forward: Closing the Response Gap

Strengthened commitment from both government bodies and private operators remains essential to closing the persistent response gap. The initiatives announced today aim to ensure that nations can capitalize on this opportunity to decelerate the pace of climate change. With satellites providing unprecedented visibility into methane emissions, the question is no longer whether we can detect these leaks, but whether we will act upon what we find.

The difference between detection and action represents one of the most significant challenges in modern climate policy. As satellite technology continues to improve and the MARS system expands its reach, the expectation is that more countries will join the ten that have already demonstrated effective response capabilities. The technology exists, the data is available, and the scientific case is clear. What remains is the political and economic will to act decisively on the information we now possess.
