Balamory is back – Miss Hoolie and PC Plum lift the lid on what to expect
Balamory, the cherished children’s television series, is making a triumphant return this month after a hiatus of over two decades. Julie Wilson Nimmo, who portrayed Miss Hoolie, reflects on the enduring impact of the show’s catchphrase: “What’s the story in Balamory?”
Wilson Nimmo shares that the phrase has been a common question for 20-odd years, practically every day. The show, which once captivated millions globally, centered on a vibrant fictional island community where problem-solving thrived through camaraderie and lighthearted fun. After its finale on CBeebies, fans have awaited its revival with anticipation.
“It’s such an honour to be back doing something that we love so much,” says Andrew Agnew, known for his role as PC Plum. The cast’s return is a nostalgic gesture, blending familiar warmth with fresh narratives.
Wilson Nimmo expresses excitement about the new stories, emphasizing that the revival feels like a “love letter to the original.” Agnew highlights the emotional reunion during the initial script read-through, recalling how the nostalgia of old songs stirred a powerful connection.
The show’s global reach, spanning Europe, Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, and South Africa, earned its cast international recognition. Wilson Nimmo remembers bonding with The Wiggles during a visit to Australia, while Agnew recalls being hailed as PC Plum in a Turkish swimming pool.
Despite the show’s modernized updates, the original cast members remain central. Penny Pocket, the town’s shopkeeper, and Edie McCredie, the delivery driver, are back alongside new characters such as Dr Ollie and The Harbourmaster. While Miles Jupp, who played Archie, is not returning, Ava Potts steps into the inventor role.
“People come up to me and sing my song at me,” Agnew jokes. “That’s lovely and I wouldn’t change that for the world, but it doesn’t go away.” He adds that the new songs have been subtly refreshed to align with contemporary tastes.
Balamory’s revival includes two new series, each with 10 episodes, produced by Lion Television Scotland. The debut episode airs on CBeebies on Monday, 20th April, with all episodes available on BBC iPlayer the same day. The series aims to reconnect with a new generation while honoring its legacy.
