Coachella Kicks Off with Sabrina Carpenter and Surprise Guests

The iconic Coachella music festival began its 2024 edition with an unexpected twist, as actor Susan Sarandon joined pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter during her opening performance. Sarandon appeared as an older version of the 26-year-old artist, delivering a monologue mid-set that added a dramatic flair to the event. Comedian Will Ferrell and actor Sam Elliott also made appearances, contributing to the Hollywood-themed atmosphere of Carpenter’s show.

Coachella, held in the California desert, attracted over 100,000 attendees each day during its two-weekend run, according to Indio police. However, the festival faced disruptions due to severe weather. Strong winds forced the cancellation of DJ Anyma’s set following Carpenter’s performance. “Due to strong wind conditions affecting Anyma’s stage build, he is unable to perform tonight,” stated the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in an Instagram post. “Coachella and Anyma have made this decision together with your safety as the priority.”

Weather warnings extended beyond the wind. An air quality advisory was issued for the Coachella Valley from Friday afternoon until Sunday morning, citing windblown dust as a potential health risk. The National Weather Service emphasized that “particle pollution can get deep into the lungs and cause serious health problems such as asthma attacks, heart and lung disease symptoms, and increased risk of lung infections.” Despite the advisory, local air quality levels were rated as good to moderate since Thursday noon.

Performances and Thematic Elements

Carpenter, making her debut as a headliner, transformed the stage into a Hollywood Hills-inspired setting, dubbing it “Sabrinawood.” Her set opened with a short film scene where she was pulled over by Sam Elliott, who then allowed her to proceed. Later, Will Ferrell took the stage as a mock electrician, further enhancing the cinematic theme.

Additional performers on Friday included KATSEYE, the global girl group, and British artist Disclosure. The lineup for Saturday features Justin Bieber, with Karol G set to headline on Sunday. UK-based acts such as Wet Leg, Lambrini Girls, Little Simz, and FKA Twigs also appear. The schedule will repeat for the following weekend, with the festival continuing at the Empire Polo Club in Indio since 2002.
