Ex-footballer Barton denies attack at golf club
Ex-Player Barton Rejects Allegations of Golf Club Attack
Joey Barton, a former professional footballer, has rejected claims of attacking a man at a golf club in Merseyside. The 43-year-old, based in Widnes, was recently remanded in custody following a plea and trial preparation session at Liverpool Crown Court. This hearing took place via video link from Liverpool Prison, where Barton is currently held.
Barton stands accused of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Kevin Lynch, a 51-year-old former non-league football manager and founder of NexGen Academy, a special education school. The incident allegedly occurred at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on 8 March. His co-accused, Gary O’Grady, a 50-year-old man, did not yet confirm a plea during the proceedings.
According to court records, the defendants were consuming alcohol with Lynch at the golf club prior to the alleged altercation. Lynch reportedly sustained severe injuries to his eye, as described in a
statement from the case: “He suffered significant trauma to his eye during the confrontation.”
The trial, set to begin on 1 September, will span seven days.
Barton’s career included playing for major clubs such as Manchester City, Newcastle United, QPR, Rangers, Burnley, and Marseille. He also held a managerial role at Fleetwood. Despite his notable football journey, the current charges could impact his reputation.
