Football rally in Peru leaves one dead and dozens injured

A tragedy unfolded during a pre-match gathering at Lima’s Alejandro Villanueva Stadium, where a fan lost their life and over 40 others were hospitalized. The Peruvian government has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident, which initially sparked confusion over structural damage to the stadium. Reports indicated possible collapse of parts of the stadium’s wall, but this was later refuted by officials.

Health Ministry Confirms Casualties

Peruvian Health Minister Juan Carlos Velasco Guerrero confirmed the death at a Lima hospital, stating that 47 people were injured, with three in critical condition. The event, held ahead of a high-stakes derby between Alianza Lima and Universitario de Deportes, drew hundreds of supporters who wore team colors and waved flags for the home side.

“There are no collapsed walls or sections fallen into the pit,” said Fire Chief Marcos Pajuelo, emphasizing that the southern stands remained structurally sound.

League Assures Match Proceeds

Despite the incident, the Peruvian Professional Football League confirmed the match against Universitario de Deportes will take place as scheduled. However, initial reports from the interior ministry noted that 40 firefighters were deployed to rescue individuals trapped in a structure, contradicting later statements from Alianza Lima.

“According to the preliminary information available, the incident is not related to the collapse of walls or structural facilities of the sports complex,” the club clarified in a statement.

The league reiterated its dedication to ensuring safety for event attendees, while authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the rally. The situation has raised concerns about crowd management and infrastructure during high-energy football gatherings.
