Israel launches ground assault in southern Lebanon

Israel Begins Ground Offensive in Southern Lebanon

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz declared approval for a new military operation in southern Lebanon, marking a significant escalation in the region’s conflict. The move follows a renewed phase of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, which resumed after a brief pause amid the ongoing war with Iran.

The army confirmed deploying forces further into southern Lebanon, surpassing the five existing positions held since the 2024 ceasefire. This expansion is part of an initiative to establish a more robust defensive position closer to Israeli borders, according to military statements.

“The objective is to thwart potential direct attacks on Israeli communities,” Katz stated, emphasizing the strategic goal of securing additional high-ground areas.

Hezbollah initiated rocket strikes on northern Israel on Monday, citing the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, as their justification. In response, Israel launched intensive air campaigns targeting southern Lebanon and Beirut’s southern suburbs, resulting in multiple casualties and displacing thousands.

The operation underscores Israel’s commitment to reinforcing its security measures, with officials framing the action as necessary to counter escalating threats from Lebanese militant groups. The conflict’s intensity has increased in recent days, prompting both sides to intensify their military efforts.
