NYPD Officer Dies in Medical Episode During Deployment to Kuwait in Iran Conflict
Officials from New York City and the state confirmed the death of an NYPD officer while serving in Kuwait during the ongoing joint U.S.-Israeli campaign against Iran. Major Sorffly Davius succumbed to his injuries on Friday at Camp Buehring, according to New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who expressed her condolences in a statement.
“Today, and always, we keep his family in our thoughts and prayers,” said the NYPD, reflecting on Davius’s legacy. “May we never forget Officer Davius’ sacrifice and may his memory be a blessing.”
Davius, who had served in the U.S. Army National Guard, held the rank of major in the 42nd Infantry Division. His career with the NYPD began in 2014, when he was stationed at the 79th Precinct. Hochul highlighted his contributions, calling him a “true Citizen Soldier” and noting his dedication as a spouse and parent.
Before his deployment to Kuwait, Davius served honorably on the Joint Task Force Empire Shield, a unit tasked with safeguarding New York’s key locations. The governor emphasized his life as a testament to the dual roles National Guard members fulfill as citizens, first responders, and soldiers.
“His career was defined by service — to his country and to New York City,” stated Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch in a shared tribute on Saturday.
NBC News has contacted the National Guard and U.S. Central Command for further details. As of now, seven U.S. service members have been killed in the war on Iran. Six of these casualties occurred in Kuwait, while the seventh died Saturday evening in Saudi Arabia, following injuries sustained during an attack on March 1.
