Repair Shop restores Britain’s first black ballerina’s shoes

Repair Shop Revives the Shoes of Britain’s First Black Ballerina

On the BBC show The Repair Shop, Britain’s first Black professional ballerina, Julie Felix, saw her long-forgotten pointe shoes returned to their former glory. The 67-year-old artist, who once faced racial barriers in the 1970s, is now celebrating a 40-year milestone since her debut solo performance. Her journey began in the UK, but she eventually moved to the United States, where she achieved fame. Returning to her roots, Felix has since taught at Birmingham Royal Ballet and now finds herself reconnecting with her past through this restoration project.

A Legacy Cut Short by Prejudice

Felix’s early career was marked by a pivotal moment in 1970s London, where she was denied entry to a ballet company due to racism. This setback led her to pursue opportunities abroad, where she rose to prominence. Despite her success overseas, she remained tied to her heritage, eventually coming back to the UK to contribute to the dance community. The restored shoes, a cherished relic from her career, now symbolize her enduring impact.

The Art of Reconnection

The Repair Shop, a BBC1 series, showcases how personal items are brought back to life by skilled artisans. Each episode features stories of sentimental value, with the restoration process often revealing hidden histories. For Felix, the repair of her shoes was more than a physical fix—it was a heartfelt tribute. “It left me speechless, as I hadn’t anticipated such a moment,” she shared when reflecting on the experience.

“It just turned out that life is busy as we all know it, and I never got the opportunity to get them fixed,” Felix explained, noting her late mother’s role in initiating the project.

A Life in Dance and Recognition

After retiring from her role as Head of Dance at St Martin’s Girls School in Solihull, Felix was honored with an MBE for her contributions to the arts. The shoe restoration, a collaboration with the show’s experts, has added a new chapter to her legacy. While her mother’s vision brought the project to fruition, the result is a testament to Felix’s perseverance and the significance of her achievements in a field once closed to her.

The Repair Shop will air on 8 April at 20:00 BST on BBC1, offering audiences a glimpse into the lives behind the objects that hold personal meaning. Follow BBC Birmingham for more updates on social media platforms like Facebook, X, and Instagram.
