Tributes after British teenager dies while visiting Vietnam

Memories and Kindness: British Teen’s Life Honored Through Organ Donation in Vietnam

A 19-year-old British woman, Orla Wates, tragically lost her life in a traffic incident while exploring Vietnam’s northern terrain. Local reports indicate she was riding the Ha Giang Loop, a scenic mountain route, when she fell from the motorcycle’s rear seat. She was taken to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in Hanoi and passed away on 2 April, with her parents present at the time.

Family’s Compassionate Choice

Orla’s mother shared heartfelt reflections with Viet Nam News, describing her as “beautiful, independent, and very funny” with a “sharp wit.” She emphasized her daughter’s zest for life, noting, “She loved to look good and lived life to the full.” The family opted to donate Orla’s organs, believing it aligned with her values. “If there were a way to give opportunity to others, this is what Orla would have wanted,” the mother said, adding that the act provided her family with “great comfort.”

“We chose to donate Orla’s organs, as we believe that if there were a way to give opportunity to others, this is what Orla would have wanted. Knowing that she is living on through them brings us great comfort.”

Support from British Authorities

A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) representative confirmed the agency was in contact with local authorities and offering support during “this hugely difficult time.” The statement expressed solidarity with Orla’s loved ones, acknowledging the “tragic death” and the family’s efforts to honor her legacy.

Legacy in Southeast Asia

Viet Nam News highlighted that Orla had embarked on a journey across Southeast Asia before beginning her studies at Durham University. The hospital confirmed her organs were donated to “five critically ill Vietnamese patients,” a decision praised for its selflessness. “In the face of profound grief, her family made a deeply compassionate decision that transcended nationality and race,” said a hospital spokesperson, adding, “One journey has come to an end, but her life continues quietly and resiliently in others who have been given a second chance.”

Reflections on a Nation’s Roads

Orla’s father, Andrew Wates, expressed how deeply his daughter connected with Vietnam, calling the donation “very important” to their family. The Ha Giang Loop, a 350km mountain drive, is often recommended by tour operators for those with local guidance, especially for less experienced riders. Vietnam’s roads, however, remain challenging, with over 10,000 fatalities and 16,000 injuries recorded in traffic accidents during 2024.
