Subnautica 2 early access release date set for May after shock legal verdict
Subnautica 2 enters early access in May following legal resolution
Following a series of delays and legal complications, the long-awaited sequel to Subnautica is set to launch in early access next month, surprising many fans. The development team has been working diligently to bring the game to completion, despite challenges that had previously stalled progress.
A beloved survival series
Subnautica, the original title, became a standout entry in the survival genre, captivating players with its immersive alien oceanic world and survival mechanics. Its success paved the way for a 2021 spin-off titled Subnautica: Below Zero, initially planned as downloadable content before evolving into a standalone expansion.
Shift in development trajectory
In 2022, a direct sequel was announced, promising co-op gameplay for up to four players. However, the release window shifted when the studio faced internal upheaval, including the sudden dismissal of its entire leadership team. This included CEO Ted Gill and senior members Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire, who were let go by Krafton, the parent company of Unknown Worlds.
Legal battle and verdict
The fired employees filed a lawsuit, alleging that Krafton had interfered with Subnautica 2’s development to delay its launch and prevent them from earning a $250 million bonus tied to sales milestones. In March 2026, a judge ruled in favor of the former executives, ordering Krafton to reinstate Ted Gill as CEO and restore his operational authority over the studio and the project.
“Thanks to your dedication and talent, we’ve added more story chapters, built new creatures, and created new biomes along with many other features,” the message reads.
The ruling also extended the deadline for the bonus conditions, giving Krafton a second chance to meet targets. Meanwhile, the company has stated it “respectfully disagrees” with the decision and is reviewing its options for moving forward.
Progress and community involvement
According to IGN, Steve Papoutsis, the new CEO, confirmed that Subnautica 2 is now poised for early access in May. “With this significant progress, we have passed KRAFTON’s milestone review last week and are now ready to start our open development journey alongside our community,” he added.
Papoutsis emphasized the team’s commitment to delivering an experience that fans will appreciate, highlighting the game’s enhanced features and new content. The decision to resume development coincides with a renewed focus on collaboration with the player base.
Despite the legal dispute, Krafton remains dedicated to ensuring the game meets its potential. “Our priority is getting this game into the hands of the community that has been eagerly waiting for it—and that means honoring the work you have already done to make that possible,” Papoutsis stated.
Subnautica 2’s release marks a pivotal moment for the franchise, with its development now back on track following the court’s intervention. The game’s journey from delay to early access underscores the challenges faced by the team and the importance of perseverance in creating its underwater world.
