Star Trek Legend Brent Spiner Surprises Fans at 77
The iconic Star Trek actor Brent Spiner recently caught fans’ attention while strolling through the Hollywood Hills at 77 years old, appearing lively and energetic.
A Pioneering Role in Star Trek: The Next Generation
Spiner first gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation, a sentient android crew member of the starship USS Enterprise-D. The series, led by Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, featured a cast that included Whoopi Goldberg and LeVar Burton.
Data’s sharp intellect and enigmatic presence served a role akin to Leonard Nimoy’s Dr. Spock from the original 1960s series. This character became a fan favorite, with Spiner reprising the role across multiple movies and recent TV series like Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Early Career and Transition to Screen Acting
Spiner’s acting journey began in the 1970s on New York stages, but by the 1980s, he had joined the original cast of the legendary musical Sunday in the Park with George. The show, written by James Lapine and scored by Stephen Sondheim, starred Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters while Spiner played two supporting roles.
After moving to Los Angeles in 1984, following the musical’s Broadway debut, he took on roles in series like Night Court and Cheers before landing the iconic Data role in 1987. His tenure on the show spanned seven seasons, from 1987 to 1994, and extended to four film spin-offs: Star Trek Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek: Nemesis.
Despite his association with Star Trek, Spiner has appeared on a variety of TV shows, including Friends, The Blacklist, and The Big Bang Theory. His filmography also includes Independence Day, Dude, Where’s My Car?, and the Martin Scorsese classic The Aviator.
Podcast Announcement and Continued Presence in Media
Recently, Spiner revealed plans for a new podcast alongside his Star Trek: The Next Generation co-star Jonathan Frakes, who played Riker. Titled
Dropping Names with Brent and Jonny
, the show is marketed as a non-Star Trek project, though the duo humorously admits their connection to the franchise.
While they insist the podcast isn’t focused solely on Star Trek, they have embraced the fact that their shared legacy will naturally influence the content. Fans can still catch Spiner in Star Trek: Picard, which aired from 2020 to 2023, and his voice appears in the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks, which premiered in 2024.
His recent sighting in the Hollywood Hills, where he looked relaxed in a casual outfit, underscores his enduring presence in the entertainment world, blending stage, screen, and new media ventures with ease.
