Qatar PM after Gulf energy attacks: ‘This war must be stopped immediately’
On Thursday, Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani urged an immediate halt to the ongoing conflict, emphasizing that the situation has reached a critical point. Speaking alongside Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Al Thani highlighted that Qatar is demanding Iran cease its attacks on Gulf nations, stressing the threat posed to civilians and global energy security.
“This war has to be halted right away, as all parties recognize the primary beneficiary and root cause of the conflict,”
The remarks followed Israel’s strike on Iran’s main natural gas field on Wednesday, prompting a swift retaliatory response from Tehran. Missiles were launched at energy facilities across the Gulf, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar’s key liquefied natural gas hub at Ras Laffan. Al Thani strongly denounced the attack on Qatar’s energy infrastructure, labeling it a calculated act of sabotage.
“We discussed the strike at Ras Laffan yesterday. This sabotage clearly signals an aggressive and reckless policy, along with a dangerous escalation by Iran,”
He added that Qatar had condemned the Israeli attack from the outset, yet Iran’s response targeted the country directly. The escalation has triggered concerns in global energy markets, as Qatar and Iran jointly hold the world’s largest natural gas reserves. Ras Laffan, the largest LNG export facility globally, is now experiencing disruptions, affecting supply chains.
European gas prices have reached peak levels since the conflict began three weeks ago, fueled by fears over supply instability. QatarEnergy reported significant damage to its main energy hub in the northern region, intensifying pressure on the already unstable market. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump asserted in a social media post that Israel acted independently, holding it solely accountable for the Wednesday strikes.
Turkey’s Fidan took a stronger stance, accusing Israel of initiating a regional battleground that endangers global stability, while noting that diplomatic efforts are still in progress. He added that Turkish mediators are engaging with both Iran and the United States to advocate for de-escalation, highlighting widespread international support for ending the war.
