How long will the latest cold snap last?
Whistling winds are battering windows and doors, with rain pelting down in the background. If you’re in Scotland, you’re likely to face snow showers later today, though the situation may be harsh for some.
Weather alerts and snowfall predictions
The Met Office has activated a yellow weather warning for snow and ice, effective for Friday morning. This covers regions north of Stirling and around Fort William, where up to 5cm of snow is forecast, with 10cm possible in elevated areas. Travel disruptions and icy surfaces are also expected in these zones.
“The current cold spell has reached its peak, and we don’t anticipate worse conditions than what’s already being experienced,” said Grahame Madge, a Met Office spokesperson.
Madge added that while winter weather may persist in northern England and Scotland, it will likely last no more than 24 hours. Strong winds, reaching 50-55mph across much of the UK, are also set to continue. Coastal areas and locations downwind of high ground could see gusts of 60mph or even 70mph.
Transport and infrastructure impacts
Transport networks are under threat as forecasters warn of potential delays on roads, railways, ferries, and flights. ScotRail has imposed speed limits on several lines, including the West Highland Line, Highland Main Line, and Far North and Kyle Lines, due to challenging conditions.
Meanwhile, Caledonian MacBrayne ferry services along Scotland’s west coast have experienced interruptions caused by fierce winds. The Met Office linked these winds to an active weather front moving southeast across the UK.
In Northern Ireland, a wind warning remains in effect until midday on Thursday. Morning gusts of 40-50mph are anticipated, with brief periods of 50-60mph winds and heavy rain. Winds are expected to ease from the west later in the day.
