Space Sustainability Takes Center Stage as Lunar Ambitions Grow

On Monday, UN representatives called upon national governments to guarantee that the renewed push toward lunar exploration does not undermine either Earth’s ecological balance or the enduring viability of space activities.

The organization emphasized that decades of accelerating space operations have demonstrated something critical: every rocket launch generates an environmental impact that may require considerable time to fully comprehend. This reality makes it essential to incorporate sustainability considerations into space programs from their earliest stages.

“Decades of rapidly expanding space activity have shown that each launch leaves an environmental footprint, and it can take a long time to understand the impact fully. This is why it is so crucial to consider the sustainability of these programmes early on,” said Jason Jabbour, Senior Officer at the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

The Growing Challenge of Orbital Debris

While international frameworks already exist to prevent contamination of outer space, the reality on the ground—or rather, in orbit—tells a different story. Current estimates suggest that approximately 140 million fragments of debris, each measuring more than one millimetre in size, circle our planet. The vast majority of these objects are too diminutive for continuous tracking, yet they retain the potential to inflict serious damage upon satellites and spacecraft alike.

However, the environmental implications extend well beyond the threat of mid-air collisions in space. When aging satellites eventually descend through Earth’s atmosphere, they deposit various metallic compounds including aluminium, lithium, and copper into the air. Researchers are currently investigating whether these substances might alter atmospheric chemistry patterns, influence cloud development, or potentially impact the protective ozone layer.

Rocket components that detach during missions also play a significant role in this growing problem. Certain sections remain suspended in orbit for extended periods before either disintegrating or returning to Earth, while other segments break into thousands of smaller fragments. Experts estimate that hundreds of tonnes of spacecraft and rocket bodies descend through the atmosphere annually—a number projected to climb as satellite networks continue expanding worldwide.

Broader Environmental Implications

Even minor mission-related items such as bolts, lens covers, and protective shields contribute to orbital congestion. Furthermore, ongoing collisions and explosions generate microscopic particles that researchers believe are already causing the night sky to appear brighter than in previous decades.

While the majority of spacecraft disintegrate during atmospheric re-entry, larger heat-resistant components sometimes survive the descent, creating potential hazards for human populations, critical infrastructure, and marine organisms below.

The Moon has captivated human imagination for thousands of years, serving as inspiration for mythology, scientific inquiry, and navigation systems while simultaneously influencing life on Earth through its gravitational pull. Marking International Moon Day on 20 July, the United Nations is drawing attention not merely to our celestial neighbour’s significance but also to the environmental challenges that accompany this new era of space exploration.

Positioned nearly 400,000 kilometres from Earth, the Moon creates tidal movements that oxygenate coastal regions, distribute essential nutrients, and support thriving marine ecosystems such as the Great Barrier Reef. Scientists maintain that studying the Moon provides crucial insights into how our solar system formed and evolved over billions of years.

Building a Sustainable Future in Space

Lunar exploration interest has accelerated dramatically in recent years. Earlier this year, NASA’s Artemis II mission transported four astronauts on a ten-day orbital journey around the Moon, advancing plans for establishing permanent human settlements on the lunar surface throughout the 2030s. Nations including China, India, and Japan, alongside numerous private enterprises, are simultaneously developing ambitious lunar initiatives.

As space activities multiply, so does awareness of their environmental consequences. The principle of space sustainability advocates for exploration practices that protect the cosmic environment for generations yet to come.

Building upon existing commitments, UN Member States have established guidelines designed to minimize space debris through waste reduction, explosion prevention, avoidance of intentional spacecraft destruction, and the safe removal of retired satellites and rocket stages from orbit. Under the 1972 UN Liability Convention, launching nations bear responsibility for any damage their space objects cause on Earth, including incidents involving joint international launches.

To tackle these emerging challenges, UNEP and the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs are collaborating to enhance scientific comprehension of space activities’ environmental effects while ensuring ecological protection becomes integral to future space governance frameworks.

As humanity readies itself for a prolonged return to the Moon, the UN maintains that protecting both space and Earth’s environment must remain fundamental to the next phase of human exploration.
